Hello and welcome to Clean Slate Design!
I'm Saskia, a London-born renovation enthusiast now living in the Scottish Borders after 12 years in Edinburgh. After a number of years working as a Chartered Accountant and fully renovating my Victorian tenement flat on the side, I decided to take the plunge to follow my passion and help others get the best out of their homes (alongside holding down a full time accountancy role and running an online plant pot shop on the other side - www.basilandfleur.co.uk)!
When I bought my flat, it had just been done up to sell. The novelty of everything being fresh and unused quickly wore off when I realised that it had been done as cheaply as possible, with no consideration given to practicality and shoddy workmanship throughout. Clueless about colour, I painted all the walls in the first shade of off-white I saw in the Dulux catalogue and spent years growing to hate everything: the awful shower cubicle, cramped kitchen, wood chip wallpaper, hideous living room fireplace and ugly old sockets and telephone ports dotted around.
Eventually I realised that I didn't have to put up with any of it and that pretty much any cosmetic element of a room can be changed. The layout and proportions of the flat were fantastic - it was just the interior that needed a complete overhaul. Whilst the majority of the renovations were straightforward and fairly small-scale, the kitchen and bathroom were a little more daunting. With high end independent firms beyond my budget, I was limited to high street suppliers. My experiences were disappointing: hours spent travelling to showrooms and sitting through design appointments; thoughtless and impractical layouts; no attention to detail; no personalisation; my ideas and concerns dismissed; pushy sales techniques; limited product selections and finally quotes that were both opaque and inflated.
I ended up designing and sourcing everything myself, spending hours testing out layouts, browsing design ideas, researching products, considering every detail and loving every minute of it! Not only did this approach save many thousands of pounds but it also resulted in rooms that are both stylish and perfectly practical. Through providing renovation advice and design help to friends and family, I realised there was a huge gap in the market for an alternative to either the one-stop shop or the full DIY approach as so many people don't have the time, confidence or indeed the inclination to design their own spaces and source products; thus, Clean Slate Design was born!
Whatever your budget and requirements, I would love to help you transform your space. All my services are remote so wherever you are based, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
